Manchester United transfer target Aaron Martin is wanted by Manchester City and now Napoli.

We reported last month that scouts from Old Trafford were keeping tabs on the 20-year-old Espanyol left-back. It was also confirmed that local rivals City have been monitoring Martin having seen summer signing Benjamin Mendy sidelined through injury.

But according to the Catalan newspaper Sport Napoli have put Martin to their top of their target list following the serious knee injury suffered by Algeria international Faouzi Ghoulam. The Algeria international suffered a serious knee injury during Napoli’s Champions League clash with Manchester City earlier this month.

Napoli’s technical staff have asked for regular updates on Martin. But his price tag looks set to deter the Serie A side. Martin is under contract to 2020 with a release clause that currently stands at €30million (currently worth just under £27million). That figure rises to €40million (£35.7million) in July of next year. Napoli rarely pay those prices.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has identified the left-back position as one where he has a problem. City are keen to recruit sooner rather than later. It still looks like a two-horse race between the Manchester clubs as Napoli won’t be able to compete on price. Real Madrid have also been linked though a move looks unlikely.
