Griezmann Staying With Atletico
The president of Atletico Madrid insists that Manchester United transfer target Antoine Griezmann will be at the La Liga side for many years to come.
Griezmann has been linked with a long-standing interest from United who were close to signing the France international last summer. He instead signed a new contract with Atletico.
Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all being linked with possible bids next summer. However, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo did the rounds of various Spanish TV and radio stations on Wednesday to dismiss the idea of Griezmann leaving the club.
“Griezmann is an Atletico player and I tell you that I think he will be for a long time to come,” Cerezo said. “You know that I’m not lying to you.”
He added: “Everything has an explanation. I’ve been around since the time of Fernando Torres with people asking if he’s going or staying. They play where they want to play.
“Griezmann is a player of Atlético Madrid. And you know I do not lie to you, players come and go, but he’s fine.”
Griezmann’s latest contract includes a release clause that was initially increased from €100million to €200million. It droppped back to €100million after the La Liga transfer window closed on 1 September and it will remain at that level until 1 July 2018. On that date it will go back to €200million.
That leaves only a brief window of opportunity for Manchester United to do a deal for Griezmann. He is expected to join up with the France squad at the end of May to prepare for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia. Given that the La Liga season ends on 20 May it only gives any potential suitors a matter of days to wrap up any deal.
