Ozil Set For Move Back To Spain?
Atletico Madrid are ready to offer Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil a chance to move to the La Liga club next summer.
Ozil is out of contract at the end of the season and there appears to be no prospect of an agreement over a new deal. The Germany international is free to speak to overseas clubs from 1 January over a pre-contract agreement.
Ozil is currently guaranteed a minimum salary at Arsenal of just over €8million a year after tax. That’s equates to around £250,000 a week gross. But according to The Sun, the 28-year-old has demanded £330,000 a week from Arsenal. That’s more than the Gunners are willing to pay.
The report adds that Atletico will offer Ozil £200,000 a week along with a huge signing-on fee. That bonus won’t be up-front; rather it would be paid over the period of his contract. Whether that will be enough to tempt the German remains to be seen. However, he knows the Spanish capital well having spent three seasons with Real Madrid between 2010 and his sale to Arsenal in 2013.
Unlike team-mate Alexis Sanchez, Ozil didn’t receive any big-club interest over the summer. Turkish sides Fenerbahce and Besiktas are both believed to be interested but neither will be in a position to offer anywhere close to his wage demands. A move to Turkey could be on the cards later in his career, but Ozil wants one final big-money contract before that happens.
Atletico fear the sale of Saul Niguez next summer. Manchester United are known to be interested and Ozil is being seen as a potential replacement. However, the La Liga side will dig in their heels over the size of the fee for Niguez who won’t be allowed to leave for anything less than his release fee of €80million (£71.2million).
