But Arsenal Face Competition For France International
Reports today claim that Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir that could cost the Gunners around £60million.
Fekir was linked last week with interest from Arsenal and is regarded as a replacement for Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez. But those reports only came after an old quote from his father was dragged up in which it was claimed that if any club from the Premier League comes calling for Fekir then he would prefer it to be the Gunners.
However, the Daily Star claims that Fekir’s £60million move to Arsenal is almost done. It believes that the France international could be on his way out of Lyon as early as January and that he could join his former team-mate at the French club, Alexandre Lacazette, at the Emirates.
Fekir was first linked with Arsenal during the 2014-15 season. However, Arsenal’s interest never amounted to anything concrete and he instead signed a new deal with Lyon. He currently earns wages of €3.6million a year. That’s the equivalent of around £60,000 a week.
Fekir has scored 12 goals in 15 games so far this season and that has brought him to the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs. The latest is Real Madrid with claims from SFR in France that Zinedine Zidane has asked for regular scouting reports.
The 24-year-old said in an interview last year that he would love to play for Zidane.
“If Zizou calle me tomorrow, I’d be delighted to move, I’d never say no to him,” Fekir said last year.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is likely to stand in the way of any January exit for one of his star players. “My Lionel Messi” is how he describes Fekir. In any case, Barcelona and Manchester United are also being linked with a player who is under contract at Lyon until 2020.
Any report of a January move to Arsenal looks a little premature.
