Manchester United transfer target Antoine Griezmann used the speculation about his future to get a better deal at Atletico Madrid. That’s according to the Frenchman’s Atletico team-mate Filipe Luis.

Griezmann was the subject of attention from Old Trafford for much of last season. But despite spending much of the campaign denying the reports and insisting he was happy in Spain, it seemed apparent at the end of the season that he was close to a move to Manchester United. Only Atletico’s transfer embargo and their inability to sign a replacement prevented him from moving to the Premier League club – or so he said at the time.

Griezmann signed a new contract with Atletico shortly after that decision. But in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Luis claims that was his intention all along.

“He is a guy who speaks very clearly and often players talk when they feel they are not being valued as much as they deserve. Then they start to attract attention,” Luis said.

“He will have had many offers from many teams and a player of his stature wants to live up to the high level of his contract and valuation. And that’s fair enough because Griezmann plays a big role here.

“In the end, no matter how much he has talked about other clubs, he has always wanted to stay and here he is – very happy. And surely he will stay here for longer. Let’s hope people understand it and get back to normal. Although he has already scored goals and goals cure everything.”

Barcelona are also being linked with Griezmann who will cost whoever buys him a minimum of €100million (currently worth £89million).

His release clause doubled to €200million after he signed his new deal in June of this year. It fell back to €100million after the La Liga transfer window closed on 1 September but it goes back to €200million on 1 July next year. That means any deal will have to be done between the end of the season in May and before the World Cup commences in June.
