“No Deadline For New Arsenal Contracts” Says Wenger
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez could be sold in January.
Both Ozil and Sanchez are out of contract at the end of the season and the pair are increasingly being linked with interest from other clubs. Sanchez is a long-standing target for both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. However, Ozil has been linked in recent weeks with Manchester United, Fenerbahce and – this morning – with another Turkish side, Super Lig champions Bestikas.
Speaking on Thursday at a press conference ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Watford at the weekend, Wenger was asked if there was a deadline for Ozil and Sanchez to put pen to paper on new deal.
“No, not at the moment,” he replied. However, he did admit that Arsenal could sell the pair in January rather than allow them to leave for nothing at the end of the season.
“Once you are in our kind of situation, we have envisaged every solution yes – it’s possible.”
Ozil’s agent Dr Erkut Sogut told a Turkish reporter earlier this week that talks with Arsenal were ongoing.
“He wants to play in the Premier League for at least two or three more years,” he said.
Wenger concurred with that suggestion.
“That is my understanding, yes. I have always said that the fact we didn’t find an agreement last year doesn’t mean the player will necessarily leave.
“Both players looked happy here and overall I hope the situation can be turned around.
“At the moment we are not close enough to announce anything.”
