Premier League Clubs To Miss Out On Algerian Full-Back
Any hopes that Manchester United and Manchester City have of signing Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam may be about to be dashed.
The Algeria international is being linked with both Premier League clubs: United because of his recent move to become part of Jorge Mendes’s stable of players and City because he was linked earlier this week with a cut-price move to the Etihad.
However, Juventus are also eyeing up a move for Ghoulam and there are fears that his entourage – members of his family – will merely use interest from overseas clubs to pursue a better deal from Napoli.
Ghoulam ditched his agent this summer to become part of Mendes’s Gestifute organisation, but his family still a large say in what shapes his career. So whereas Mendes would like to offer the 26-year-old to the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United, a stay in Italy looks more likely.
Ghoulam currently earns around €2.8million a year after tax – the equivalent of £85,000 a week gross. His release clause of €40million (£35million) applies only to overseas clubs. His entourage are looking at a new deal with Napoli worth €4million a year nett, which is what Juventus would be willing to offer. That’s around £125,000 a week.
