Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is set to begin talks over a new contract with Napoli. But he has one eye on the prospect of a move to China.

The 35-year-old has been Napoli’s first-choice keeper since rejoining the club in the summer of 2015. Reina played in 74 out of Napoli’s 76 Serie A matches in 2015-16 and 2016-17 and he has followed that up by appearing in all five of the club’s games so far this season.

Reina is out of contract at the end of the season and Napoli have indicated to his representatives that they wants to discuss a new deal. However, perhaps with one eye on the future, they have hinted that they want the Spaniard to take a pay cut as they up the possibility that he won’t play as much. The keeper is now waiting to see if he receives any offers from China. Reports from Italy claim he could be offered a three-year deal in the Far East.

Reina spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Napoli. However, he was sold by Liverpool to Bayern Munich for £2.5million in the summer of 2014. His time at Bayern was not a success – he made just three appearances for the side and was given a red card in one of those games. Napoli put him out of his misery at the Allianz Arena and paid just over £1.5million in 2015.
