Mourinho Altered Training At Inter So Maicon Could Sober Up

Maicon ‘Would Arrive Drunk On Monday Mornings’ Claims Former Inter Midfielder

Jose Mourinho was forced to change training sessions at Inter Milan to evenings so Brazilian defender Maicon would be sober when he trained. That’s according to former Inter midfielder Ianis Zicu.

Former Romania international Zicu, who last played for ASA Targu Mures last season, was asked if he had ever experienced players arriving at training sessions still drunk from the night before. The question was asked following reports that Steaua Bucharest players each drank a glass of wine with the club’s owner before last night’s 3-0 Europa League victory over Czech side Viktoria Plzen.

“At Inter, Mourinho had a player who was always drunk at Monday’s training session – a very good right-back, Maicon.” Zicu told DigiSport.

“He called all the boys together, talked to them and asked, ‘How do we make Maicon fit?’

“He suggested that they train in the evening. And he decided that’s what they would do.

“They did not train the morning, they did it in the evening, so Maicon would have come round by training.

“There are situations where that happens in a team, and the team has to decide what to do.”

It appears to have worked with Maicon. He played a total of 236 games in all competitions for Inter scoring 20 goals for the side and winning four Serie A titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
