Reds Want Intent To Be Taken Into Account
Liverpool have appealed against the length of Sadio Mane’s ban for his red card during the match against Manchester City on Saturday. The Senegal international was sent off in the first half of the Reds’ 5-0 defeat to City at the Etihad Stadium after he clattered into City goalkeeper Ederson in the 37th minute. The Brazilian was taken off after treatment.
As it stands, Mane will miss three matches: next weekend’s visit of Burnley, plus two matches against Leicester City, one in the EFL Cup and one in the Premier League.
However, Liverpool claim the ban is excessive. They argue that Ederson’s accident was the result of an accident and that Mane’s ban should reflect the fact that he went to play the ball.
An appeals panel will give its decision by 6pm on Thursday. They could uphold the ban to three games, or they may reduce it to two matches or even one.
