The chief executive of Borussia Dortmund has admitted that Ousmane Dembele is on the verge of a transfer to Barcelona.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “I think we’re on the way.

“There should be a transfer for Ousmane Dembele, which is a weakening of the team. You cannot replace a player like Ousmane like for like.”

He continued: “Should Dembele leave the club, we may end up doing something on the transfer market.”

Barcelona have offered to pay €120million (£110.7million) for the 20-year-old who only moved to Dortmund last summer. Add-ons and bonus payments will add a further €30million (£27.7million) to that figure.

Dortmund paid €15million to French side Rennes for Dembele’s signature in the summer of 2016. But part of that transfer agreement entitles the Ligue 1 outfit to 25 percent of any subsequent proceeds. That means they will pick up €30million from the guaranteed fee with a further €7.5million.

Dembele made 32 Bundesliga appearances during his debut season for Dortmund. He scored six goals along with three in 12 games in cup competitions.

The youngster is currently under a club-imposed suspension for refusing to turn up to training.
