One Final Bid For Dier?
Manchester United are considering one final bid for Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Eric Dier.
United put in an enquiry about the England international at the end of last season only to be told that Dier isn’t for sale. Tottenham’s stance hasn’t changed. But according to the Daily Mirror, United are still preparing a £60million take-it-or-leave-it bid for the 24-year-old.
United are in the market for a holding midfielder. They were ready to make a move for Chelsea’s Serbia international Nemanja Matic, but theie signing of Romelu Lukaku from Everton from under Chelsea’s noses has now made that transfer more difficult. The Premier League champions aren’t interested in selling to a rival at the top end of the league and Matic is now more likely to sign for Juventus.
That means United have turned back to Dier. The former Sporting Lisbon man is known to be keen on joining the club he supported as a boy. But he signed a new deal last October worth £70,000 a week and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insists that as he was quite happy to put pen to paper then he can have no complaints if Tottenham dig in their heels now. His contract runs to 2021.
United have awarded Michael Carrick a one-year contract extension. However, this is likely to be his final year at Old Trafford and the 36-year-old is expected to retire at the end of the campaign.
Dier moved to Tottenham from Sporting after spending much of his childhood in Lisbon. Spurs paid just over £4million in August 2014 and he soon broke in to the Tottenham first team making 28 league appearances in his first season with the club. He has gone on to make a total of 135 first-team appearances in all competitions scoring eight goals. He also has 19 full international caps for England.
