Oblak, Ederson On Manchester United Transfer Radar
Manchester United are eyeing up possible replacements for David De Gea with two players seemingly favourites.
De Gea looks set to leave Old Trafford. Reports this week suggested that Real’s players are convinced the United keeper will be joining them this summer. The 26-year-old saw a move to the Bernabeu collapse at the last minute two years ago.
Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak is the favourite to replace De Gea according to the Daily Star. United scouts have watched Oblak on a number of occasions this season.
The Slovakia international has won a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga. Last season he won the prestigious Zamora trophy awarded to the player conceding the least number of goals per game in the league. He looks set to retain the trophy having conceded just 20 goals in 28 games.
But Oblak is the expensive option. He has a release clause of €100million (£84million) in his contract with Atletico. The La Liga side are still under a worldwide transfer embargo after being found guilty of illegally transporting under-age players across national borders. An appeal is currently in front of the Court Of Arbitration For Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.
If Atletico lose their appeal they will be barred from signing any new players this summer. That means the only way United will sign Oblak is by paying the full value of his release clause as Atletico wouldn’t be able to recruit a replacement.
Benfica Keen On Pereira
Manchester United are also being linked with Benfica goalkeeper Ederson. The Red Devils were reported earlier this month to be watching the 23-year-old who has started 27 of Benfica’s 33 league games so far this season.
Like de Gea and Jose Mourinho, Ederson is a client of agent Jorge Mendes. However, United are likely to face competition for his signture from local rivals Manchester City. Football Gossip reported in February that Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira had travelled to Manchester for talks with City over to move for Ederson. The Sky Blues have been tracking him since the 2015-16 season.
The Brazilian, who is in his second season as a first-team regular at Benfica, has a release clause of €45million (£38.6million) with the Portugese side.
Meanwhile, talks will take place at the end of the season with De Gea. The 26-year-old wants a move to Real having been devastated when his transfer to the Bernabeu collapsed in the summer of 2015.
Jose Mourinho has already stated that Sergio Romero will play in goal in United’s Europa League Final clash with Ajax next week. Youngster Joel Pereira will play in the final Premier League game of the season with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Portugese newspaper A Bola claims that Benfica chief Vieira was in London this week for talks with United and that a move for Pereira was on the agenda. That leaves open the prospect of either a part-exchange deal involving Ederson and Pereira or the loan of the United keeper as part of a deal for Ederson.
