‘You Want De Gea – We Want Bale’
Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen says the club ought to demand Gareth Bale from Real Madrid as part of any deal for goalkeeper David De Gea.
Reports this morning claimed Real are preparing a £60million bid for De Gea which would be a world record for a goalkeeper. The Spain international was approached in January by his agent Jorge Mendes – a man with close connections at the Bernabeu – to see if he would be interested in a move this summer.
But speaking to TalkSport on Thursday morning, Meulensteen, who was part of the coaching staff at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, said that United should replace one world-class player with another.
“As the manager and owner of a club you need to get close to the truth,” Meulensteen told presenter Alan Brazil.
“You can’t stop the speculation – it won’t go away.
“As a manager you have to say, ‘OK, what is really the case here with De Gea? Does he want to go? Is he going? What is the best scenario for us? What do we want to get out of it?
“The speculation has been there now for three years and Manchester United and Jose Mourinho have to make sure, if it [a Real Madrid transfer] is the case, what is the best outcome for Manchester United?
“For instance, they say ‘Ok, you get De Gea – what do we want ? We want Bale’. There has to be something where Manchester United come out of it even better.”
However, Real are unlikely to part with Bale – a player whom president Florentino Perez regards as the future of Real Madrid.
United were linked with the Wales international before he moved to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. However, he spurned the chance of a move to Old Trafford once he heard of Real’s interest.
