Mourinho In Unusual Interruption During Press Conference
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was called upon to answer an usual call this afternoon.
It’s the bane of the occasional press conference. The subject is in the middle of answering a quuestion when a phone rings – usually his own.
But reporters these days have a habit of placing some kind of recording device in front of the subject. In the old days, it used to be a small tape recorder usually with a microphone emblazoned with the owner’s logo attached. But with modern technology mobile phones are just as good a device for recording. Granted, they don’t have the microphone and logo but it makes the desk look a little tidier.
However, the problem with using a phone rather than some sort of recording device is that the phone can sometimes ring. That’s what happened at Jose Mourinho’s press conference this afternoon.
United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday in one of the most eagerly anticipated Premier League matches of the season. The media centre was full to capacity for the pre-match press conference and Mourinho was in full flow.
But then a phone in front of the United boss began to ring and Mourinho picked it up. Everyone in the room thought it was his own telephone.
No – it was a call from TalkSport. Someone from the radio station’s office was trying to contact their reporter at the event. Cue, an embarrassed hack mildly castigating his hapless office staff before the press conference could resume.
Meanwhile, Mourinho is hoping to have both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo available for Sunday’s clash with second-placed Liverpool.
Ibrahimovic missed Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie with Hull City due to illness, while Rojo limped off during last Saturday’s FA Cup 3rd Round victory over Reading with a muscle injury.
“I think they are available,” Mourinho told MUTV. “I cannot confirm with 48 hours to the match but I think so.”
