Cristiano Ronaldo will be crowned as the winner of the Ballon D’Or next Monday, according to a leaked report today.

Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Ronaldo has already been told in advance of the official announcement next Monday evening as has his club side Real Madrid.

The Ballon D’Or contest – or Golden Ball – is run by the French newspaper France Football. Mundo Deportivo claims that from 6pm on Monday evening Central European Time the magazine will start announcing the votes for the 30 contenders with the winner announced two hours later at 8pm (7pm GMT).

However, Mundo Deportivo has got word that France Football will despatch an interviewer and photographer to Madrid on Thursday of this week for a photo session with Ronaldo. Images of the Portugese holding the Ballon D’Or will appear in next week’s edition of the magazine.

Lionel Messi will be announced as the winner of the Silver Ball but while third place seems to be wide open, Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann appears to be the favourite.

If the result proves to be correct it will be the fourth time Ronaldo has won the award – one behind l Messi. It also means that each of the last nine awards will have been won by either Messi or Ronaldo. The Argentine won each year from 2009 to 2012 as well as in 2015. Ronaldo won in 2008, 2013, 2014 and this year.

This will also be the first year that France Football has had sole control of the competition. The magazine ran the competition from 1956 to 2009 when it was merged with Fifa’s World Player Of The Year Award to create the Fifa Ballon D’Or. After six years the two parties agreed to terminate the joint award.

Fifa will hold their inaugural Fifa Best Football Awards at a ceremony in Zurich next month.
