Ronaldo Confident As Real Top La Liga
Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is looking forward to this weekend’s El Clasico clash with Barcelona. La Liga’s top two meet for the first time this season in Saturday’s game at the Nou Camp.
Brazilian newspaper Globo posted this on its Jogo Extra Instagram account. Ronaldo says: “Five days to El Clasico. It’s going to go fast. So am I.”
Ronaldo was a little calmer on his own account posting this image on Monday morning. No doubt in a bid to shift a few more units of sunglasses for his sponsors.
Ronaldo has good reason to be confident. Victory over Barcelona at the Nou Camp would put the La Liga title in danger of being a one-horse race before it even makes the halfway stage.
Real Madrid are already six points ahead of Barcelona – a reversal of the situation at this stage last season when they were six points behind the Catalan side. Victory for Real would put them nine points ahead and would be a crushing blow to Luis Enrique and his side especially if they lose in their own back yard.
It is far too early to suggest there is a crisis at Barcelona. Real are unbeaten in 31 games in all competitions. They haven’t tasted defeat since a 2-0 reversal at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on 6 April and their record in La Liga this season stands at 10 wins and 3 draws.
But Enrique had a twenty-minute session before training this morning in which the side thrashed out the problems from yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad. It was the eighth visit on the trot to the Anoeta where Barca have failed to come away with all three points.
Yesterday’s result has already led to defender Gerard Pique to admit that it would be “very difficult” for Barcelona to win La Liga. That may be a little premature.
The bookies have certainly yet to write off Barcelona’s chances of inflicting a first league defeat of the season on Real. As of Monday afternoon, Barcelona were still slight favourites amongst all major bookmakers. Victory would see them come to within three points of Real and the race would be back on again.
