Sporting Want New Deal For Martins
Sporting Lisbon are working on a new deal for Manchester United and Barcelona transfer target Gelson Martins. The 21-year-old was linked earlier this month with interest from both clubs each of whom have sent scouts to watch him in action on a number of occasions.
According to the Portugese newspaper A Bola, Martins has a release clause of €60million (£54.2million at present) in his current deal with Sporting. However, the newspaper adds that the Portugese club are looking to increase the size of the clause to €75million (£67.7million) or even €80million (£72.3million).
Martins is likely to resist such a move. His team-mate William Carvalho is often considered one of Europe’s best young defensive midfielders, but top European clubs are loath to pay release fees of €35-45million – in Carvalho’s case – for a player who hasn’t performed in one of the continent’s top leagues.
Carvalho remains at Sporting on wages of around £15,000 a week – a fraction of what he could earn at one of Europe’s top clubs. Martins may try to negotiate a steep pay rise before agreeing to a release clause that could potentially make him one of Europe’s most expensive players.
Meanwhile, top European scouts are expected to flock to the remainder of Sporting’s Champions League games – a double-header with Borussia Dortmund, plus ties with Real Madrid and Legia Warsaw. They will be looking to see how he acquits himself at a standard of football much higher than the Portugese league.
