Rabiot Agent ‘Has Arsenal Talks’
The agent of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot has been in London for talks over an Arsenal transfer. That’s despite PSG’s insistence that Rabiot will be going nowhere in January.
The 20-year-old – who was linked with Arsenal in the summer of 2014 before he signed a new contract with the French side – is known to want a January move away from PSG. But after Rabiot claimed he had told club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi that a temporary move would be the ideal Christmas present for him he was roundly and publicly castigated by the PSG chief.
“These statements are unacceptable. I did not appreciate at all the fact that he states a loan would be a Christmas gift. This is a total lack of respect towards the club coach who has done so much for him,” the Qatari said.
He added: “He will be here in January – 100 percent.”
But the Daily Star Sunday begs to differ. It claims Rabiot’s mother – who acts as his agent – has been in London for talks and that a £15million move is on the cards.
PSG have built up a reputation in recent years for successfully digging in their heels over players they want to keep – Edinson Cavani being a prime example. When Rabiot looked as though he was going to run out the final year of his contract last season they put him in the reserves who at the time were struggling at the bottom end of the French fourth division.
The Star also claims that Arsenal are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka. It was reported this week by Xhaka’s father that the Gunners were one of a number of clubs interested in the Switzerland international. But Xhaka has a €30million (£22million) release clause in his contract that only comes into play in 2017. Until then Monchengladbach can demand whatever they see as the market price.
However, the Star suggests that Arsenal are willing to pay £37million – just over €50million – for the 23-year-old. If the report proves to be true that’s a price Monchengladbach may find difficult to refuse.
Elneny Could Be Only January Signing
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that Mohamed Elneny will be the only signing the Gunners make in the winter transfer window.
Speaking after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland in the FA Cup, Wenger said he was looking to get some of his injured players back in action and was looking at just one addition this month.
“I believe that the next step is to get Rosicky back, Welbeck back, Sanchez back, Wilshere back and maybe we will get one player in,” the Arsenal boss told Sky Sports.
That player is expected to be Elneny whose £7.4million transfer from Swiss side FC Basel has been held up by his work permit application. However, the Egypt international could be confirmed as an Arsenal player this week.
