Former Arsenal transfer target Alex Grimaldo has left Barcelona for Portugese side Benfica. The 20-year-old defender was linked with Arsenal last month after Barca’s sporting director Robert Fernandez announced that he had refused to sign a new contract and would leave at the end of the season.

But despite Arsenal showing an interest Grimaldo is heading to Benfica. The champions of Portugal will pay an initial £1.5million.

Grimaldo failed to break into the first-team at Barcelona. He was offered on loan to Levante during the summer, but he elected to remain at the Nou Camp even though it meant turning out for the club’s reserve side playing in Spain’s third division.

Grimaldo was given permission to miss training on Monday to complete his move. He has signed a five-and-a-half year contract with Benfica.
