Manchester United Need New Frontman, Say Fans
The Manchester Evening News ran the online survey on Tuesday. More than 4000 United fans responded with 80 percent of them saying the club should buy a new striker. The side have scored only two Premier League goals so far this season.
The survey gave supporters the opportunity to say who they would like to see at Old Trafford. Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller was the first choice with almost 50 percent of the votes; Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus was next with 15 percent – no sign of Neymar.
But neither player look set to move to Old Trafford. Both Bayern and Borussia have no interest in selling their star men, especially with less than a week to go to the close of the transfer window. United lodged a £60million bid for Muller last week that was rejected out of hand by Bayern. Reus has been on United’s radar in the past, but he signed a new deal with Dortmund earlier this year that ruled out a move away from the Bundesliga club.
United’s New Striker: Fellaini
Meanwhile, United boss Louis van Gaal believes he can use Marouane Fellaini as a striker this season. The Belgian made 19 Premier League starts last season and van Gaal suggested he could use other players in Fellaini’s favoured midfield role with the Belgian playing in a more advanced position.
“He can play as a No.9 and a No.10, and he can also play as a No.6 and No.8,” van Gaal said at a press conference before tonight’s Champions League clash with Club Brugge.
“This year he will play more as a No.9 and No.10 rather than 6 and 8 because there we have other players.”
The latest on United target Neymar is that Barcelona expect to offer him a long-term deal having been stung into action by United’s interest. Club president Josep-Maria Bartomeu said he wants the Brazilian to retire at the club. [Click here for the full story].
Neymar PR Sees Team-Mates Attend Child’s Birthday Party
Meanwhile, Neymar, along with team-mates Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, were photographed celebrating the fourth birthday of Neymar’s son, Davi Lucca.
In what appears to have been an orchestrated PR stunt, the three players helped Neymar, his parents, sister and the child’s mother – who has relocated to Barcelona so the child can be closer to his father – held a Jurassic Park-themed party for the infant.
United have bid £140million for the Brazilian – Neymar, that is, not Davi Lucca.
