Enrique Rules Out Manchester United Move For Neymar
Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is refusing to be drawn on rumours linking the Catalan side’s Brazilian forward Neymar with a Manchester United transfer. Reports over the weekend have heightened with the suggestion on Sunday that the 23-year-old is keen on a move to the Premier League.
“Talking about Neymar and other clubs doesn’t interest me,” Enrique said after Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao. “I don’t talk about rumours. I focus on what happens in my team.”
Meanwhile, Neymar’s agent, Wagner Ribeiro, was spotted at Old Trafford during Saturday’s goalless draw with Newcastle United. That has inevitably led to even more speculation about the Barcelona player, though Ribeiro represents a number of young Brazilian players.
Certainly the Catalan media aren’t taking seriously the links between Neymar and United. The Barcelona-based sports dailies are more interested in his acting debut in a telenovela and the fact that he recently won €17,000 (£12,000) playing poker than in the prospect of a Manchester United transfer.
However, there are also fears that Neymar will use United’s interest to force Barcelona into offering him a much-improved deal. The 23-year-old’s salary is stated by various outlets to be anywhere between £120,000 and £180,000 a week – a salary that could very easily be matched by United. Barcelona are expected to offer him a new deal to placate him.
De Gea Agent Tells Him He Will Move To Madrid
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will be a Real Madrid player by the time the transfer window closes in Spain next Monday. That’s what his agent Jorge Mendes keeps telling him.
The Madrid-based newspaper AS claims that Mendes is in constant contact with De Gea and is confident that a deal can be done before the end of the month. It adds that despite van Gaal’s comments stating that De Gea will not be sold before the transfer deadline this is all part of the negotiations between the two clubs and that a deal is in the offing.
Quite what that deal will be isn’t known. United want either €40million (£28million) or €30million (£21million) plus Keylor Navas, who was selected ahead of Kiko Casilla for Real’s opening game in La Liga, a goalless draw with Sporting Gijon on Sunday.
The transfer deadline in the Premier League is next Tuesday, 1 September. In Spain it is a day earlier – 31 August.
Reports over the weekend claimed the relationship between De Gea and van Gaal has broken down over the manager’s revelation that De Gea refused to play against Aston Villa a week last Friday. The keeper remains sidelined and has sat in the stands for each of United’s four games so far this season.
Mane Injury Not As Bad As Feared
Manchester United transfer target Saido Mane is expected to return to action for Southampton later this week. The Senegal international came off with an injured hip in Sunday’s goalless draw at Watford but manager Ronald Koeman claims he will be back for Thursday’s Europa League game with FC Midtylland in Denmark.
United have made an enquiry for Mane, but Koeman claims there has been no bid and that the 23-year-old wants to stay at St Mary’s.
