Arsenal are being linked with Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper. Reports from Catalunya claim Arsene Wenger is urging his staff to pay the €12million (£8.4million) release fee for the 20-year-old midfielder.
The Gunners were linked with Samper early last season when it was reported that Arsene Wenger was mulling over a €24million double-bid for Samper and another young Barcelona player, Munir. There was also interest in the summer of 2011 when Arsenal signed two other youngsters from Barca’s La Masia academy, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin. On that occasion, Samper visited the club’s London Colney training complex.
Samper faces the prospect of another season playing in Barcelona’s B team who were relegated at the end of last season to the third tier of Spanish football. However, his way to first-team football is being blocked by the likes of Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Sergi Roberto.
With the presidential elections out of the way, Samper’s agent, Pere Guardiola, is expected to sit down with sporting director Robert Fernandez to discuss the way forward. A move to Arsenal is still on the cards.
