United Linked With Argentine Striker As RvP Heads For Exit
Manchester United are being linked with Villareal striker Luciano Vietto. The young Argentine has been strongly linked with Liverpool, but Spanish newspaper AS claims the Red Devils are now interested in the 21-year-old.
However, United will face competition for his signature from Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone, coach of the 2014 Champions League runners-up, has a ‘dream’ front three of Vietto and Carlos Tevez with Antoine Griezmann.
Villareal want Vietto to sign a new deal with the club – as well they should: the release clause in his current deal stands at just €10million (£7million). The striker scored 20 goals this season with eight coming in Europa League games. His record in La Liga was 12 goals in 32 games at an average of one goal for every 158 minutes.
United are likely to be in the market for at least one striker this summer. Radamel Falcao has gone back to Monaco while Robin van Persie is being linked with a move to Serie A outfit Lazio.
Reports from Italy claim the Rome club will pay United £11million and will offer van Persie a four-year deal worth a basic £100,000 a week.
United Target Laporte Signs New Deal With Bilbao
Meanwhile, Manchester United transfer target Aymeric Laporte has signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao.
United have been linked with the 21-year-old for much of the season but were deterred from making any bid by the presence in his contract of a release clause worth €42million (over £30million). Athletic have a reputation for insisting on every last penny of a release clause. That’s largely because they only field players from the Basque country so aren’t in a position to go out and buy expensive overseas players.
But United’s future task in recruiting Laporte will be no easier. The release clause in his new deal is worth €50million (£35million).
Navas Told He’s Staying. De Gea In For Casillas?
Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has been told that he does have a future at the club. The Costa Rica international had been marked down as favourite to exit the Bernabeu should David De Gea be recruited this summer. However, reports from Spain claim he is part of Rafa Benitez’s plans for next season.
Navas played in just six La Liga games this season but he faces the prospect of being pushed even further down the pecking should De Gea arrive.
It begs the question as to whether Iker Casillas will be given the push if Real sign De Gea – or if De Gea will move at all from Manchester United. At present, all is quiet on that particular front.
