RvP To Sign Four-Year Deal
Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is closing in on a move to Serie A side Lazio. Italian newspaper Il Messagerro says talks have taken place between the two clubs over a deal worth around €15million (£11million) to United.
Van Persie moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2012 in a deal worth £24million. However, his contract at United expires at the end of next season.
The only sticking point at the moment appears to be van Persie’s wages. He currently earns around £180,000 a week with United. Lazio are willing to offer him a four-year deal worth €4million a year nett of any taxes. That works out at the equivalent of £100,000 a week gross. But the Dutchman isn’t willing to go much below €5million a year nett so various add-ons and bonuses could add a further million to his basic pay giving him a wage of £125,000 a week gross.
Van Persie scored 30 goals in 48 games for United in all competitions during his first season with the club. But injuries and a loss of form meant he has since been unable to get anywhere near that scoring record. He scored 18 goals in 28 games under David Moyes in 2013-14 and just 10 goals in 29 games this season at an average of one for every 220 minutes on the pitch.
Last weekend, the 31-year-old voiced doubts over his future with Manchester United telling Dutch journalists:
“I have to consider the situation. So does the club. They do their homework and so do I.
“I have to think about exactly what I want. This is a new situation for me. I’m 32 in August, but I still have quite a few years left in me and I want to keep playing.”
Van Persie had been offered to three Serie A clubs in recent months, though Lazio wasn’t one them. But their 4-2 victory at Napoli secured a place in the play-off round for next season’s Champions League where one of their potential opponents will be Manchester United!
