Arsenal’s hopes of making it into the quarter-finals of the Champions League took a huge blow last night with a 3-1 home defeat to Monaco in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash.
Monaco took the lead on 38 minutes when Geoffrey Kondobgia’s long-range shot took a deflection off Per Mertesacker past David Ospina in the Arsenal goal.
The Ligue 1 side doubled their advantage on 53 minutes when former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov sprinted past the Arsenal defence to fire past Ospina.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looked to have given Arsenal some hope with an injury-time goal, but Arsenal were caught out again just seconds later. Possession was given away in midfield and Ferreira-Carrasco sprinted away from the Arsenal defence to score a third.
