The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of next season and talks are dragging on over a new deal. But Schmeichel says it is imperative the De Gea deal is sorted as it will send out a message to the rest of the Premier League.
“It’s very important the club’s best players sign new contracts to send a signal,” Schmeichel said.
“It shows that they believe in the Manchester United project and believe the club will go back not only to the top of the Premier League but also European football.
“If De Gea signs a new deal it would be a very big signal and I’m sure everyone who loves the club would love that.
“Fingers crossed he will sign another five-year contract.”
Real Madrid are believed to be keen and there are reports of a world-record bid for a keeper, but De Gea is said to be insisting that United remove a proposed £50million release clause from the new deal.
