Manchester United Transfer News: Witsel, Savic, Koke

Witsel In United Link

Axel Witsel Manchester United transferZenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel is a Manchester United transfer target, according to reports today, but the Premier League side will face competition from Juventus.

Reports from Italy claiming United are hot favourites to secure his signature are far-fetched as it appears to be Juve who are currently in pole position.

Witsel could be on the move this summer, although Zenit are likely to demand a high fee for the Belgium international.

The 26-year-old was asked by Calciomercato in Italy about the chances of a move to the Serie A leaders and in particular who his idols were:

“Zidane,” he replied. “Now I would say Pirlo who is a fantastic midfielder, a class player.

“Juve? It’s a possibility which we cannot exclude: we will see in the summer.”

But Witsel has a habit of giving diplomatic answers to loaded questions without appearing to be non-commital. In January he was asked about the prospects of a move to the Premier League.

“A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see. I am still young, only 26. We’ll see in the future. I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young.”

Less probably is a move for Fiorentina defender Stefan Savic. The former Manchester City man is a £15million target for United this summer, claims Metro.

Savic failed to impress at City and was sold after just one season, but he appears to be happy at Fiorentina and recently signed a contract extension to 2019. A return to Manchester looks unlikely.

Finally, United and Manchester City look set to slug it out for Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke. Louis van Gaal turned down the opportunity last summer to sign Toni Kroos, a similar player to Koke.

However, both Manchester clubs will be aware that Koke’s release fee stands at €60million (£45million).
