Manchester City’s Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread after a Luis Suarez brace sent them crashing to a 2-1 home defeat to Barcelona.
The former Liverpool man lashed home a fortuitous loose ball on 16 minutes to give Barcelona the lead and he prodded home a second on 30 minutes.
Sergio Aguero gave City a lifeline when he slotted home a David Silva backheel with just over 20 minutes to go. The match – and perhaps the tie – was effectively lost when Gael Clichy was sent off four minutes later for a second yellow card.
Lionel Messi missed a penalty right at the end of the match and he also put the rebound from Joe Hart’s save wide of the post.
But City must score twice in the Nou Camp in three weeks time to have any hope of progressing.
