United Linked With January Spree
Manchester United are still being linked with a huge recruitment drive in January. That’s despite the club having publicly stated that there would be no big signings in the winter transfer window.
But the Daily Star Sunday disagrees and the paper claims that United will make three signings worth a total of £80million.
Kevin Strootman is still being linked with a move to Old Trafford in January. The Roma midfielder is back in action after a cruciate knee ligament injury, but that action has amounted to just 68 minutes spread over three games.
He managed a seven-minute appearance off the bench against Torino last month and 54 minutes as a starter against Sassuolo as well as eight minutes of Roma’s Champions League defeat to Manchester. But he has spent the side’s last two games warming the bench and he failed to get on the pitch again during last night’s goalless draw with AC Milan. He goes into the transfer window still with doubts over his fitness.
The Star adds the Benfica duo of Enzo Perez and Nico Gaitan into the mix. The paper claims the pair are close to moves to Old Trafford for a combined fee of £51million.
Both players have been linked with United in the past.
Perez was linked this summer, but he ruled out a move by signing a new deal and saying he and his family are happy in Lisbon.
Gaitan is a similar player to Strootman so a move for both looks unlikely. He has also been extensively linked with United in the past but Sir Alex Ferguson failed to get the deal over the line with Benfica insisting on the full value of his £36million release fee.
Gaitan signed a new contract with Benfica as recently as last month, but the deal was significant in that his release fee was reduced to £28million.
