Mata In Sevilla Link
Mata only moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in a £37.5million transfer last January. But the Spain international is being tipped to make way for Radamel Falcao – if and when the Colombian finally comes good – with Falcao set to join Robin van Persie as United’s strike pairing and Wayne Rooney dropping back to fill Mata’s midfield role.
But that hasn’t happened yet and Mata has pretty much maintained his place in the United starting line-up. He has started in nine of United’s Premier League games and been a substitute in two more – hardly ‘in and out of the side’ as is being quoted.
The Daily Mirror – which began this rumour – claims that United are looking at other midfield targets, in particular Roma’s Kevin Strootman, in whom United have had a long-standing interest.
But Roma insist that Strootman is going nowhere.
There is also the problem of Mata’s fee. The Spaniard would cost Sevilla somewhere north of £25million. The cash-strapped side just don’t have that sort of money at the moment.
United will resist any temptation to sell Mata in January. A summer move looks more likely. Louis van Gaal will step up his interest in Strootman at the end of the season as they know any move in January is a non-starter, not least because the Dutchman has only just returned from an eight-month lay-off.
’No Real Option’ Over Reus
Real Madrid do not have first call over Manchester United transfer target Marco Reus.
The Borussia Dortmund forward is likely to quit the Bundesliga side at the end of the season when his £20million release clause kicks in.
Rumours have suggested that the Spanish giants have first refusal over 25-year-old Reus, but Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has rubbished the reports.
“Marco alone will decide where he wants to go,” Watzke told German newspaper Bild.
“What will we do if he activates his release clause?”
Dortmund are currently bottom of the Bundesliga and look set to lose some of their star names in the summer. Reus is likely to quit the club and defender Mats Hummels – another Manchester United transfer target – could follow him out of the door if the side fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
That looks a forlorn hope at the moment after eight defeats in 13 league games. A battle against relegation currently looks more likely.
