Roma In Fresh Johnson Link
Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson is a transfer target for Serie A side Roma, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph. But reports that they Italian outfit will match the £120,000-a-week Johnson earns at Anfield are wide of the mark.
Johnson was on target with the only goal of the game in yesterday’s victory over Stoke City. The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has already been linked with a move to the Italian capital. The Bosman ruling means he can speak to overseas clubs from 1 January about a move abroad.
However, this is the first time the claim has been heard that Roma will match his current Liverpool earnings.
The Telegraph claimed today that Roma are happy to match his current £120,000-a-week wages given that they will not have to pay any transfer fee.
Roma signed Johnson’s former England international team-mate Ashley Cole last summer after his contract expired at Chelsea. They didn’t have to pay a transfer fee but they didn’t match his wages on that occasion. They are unlikely to do the same for Johnson.
Cole saw his wages slashed from over £120,000 a week down to £60,000 a week at the Serie A club. Expect Roma to do the same with Johnson.
Liverpool are believed to have offered Johnson a new deal that would see his wages cut to the same £60,000 a week he is currently being offered by Roma.
