Vlaar Linked With £8m Arsenal Transfer

Defender Still Stalling Over New Villa Deal

Ron Vlaar Arsenal transferArsenal could be set for an £8million January move for Aston Villa central defender Ron Vlaar, according to fresh speculation.

The Netherlands international was linked earlier this season with interest from the Emirates and has also been linked extensively with a move to Manchester United. However, the Daily Express claims that Arsenal look set to bid £8million for Vlaar even though he is out of contract at the end of the season.

The paper adds that the Gunners will also offer Vlaar a pay packet that will be a “considerable improvement” on the £25,000-a-week he currently earns at Villa Park.

The size of the fee as well as Vlaar’s age cast some doubts over the story. Unless there is a bidding war for Vlaar involving Arsenal and United then £8million sounds a huge fee for a player heading towards the end of his contract. Plus, Vlaar turns 30 in February, the age beyond which Arsenal tend to offer only one-year deals.

The Dutchman has already had talks with Villa boss Paul Lambert. However, he knows that if he waits until the end of the season he has the chance to increase his earnings potential given that he will be available on a free transfer. Much depends on whether Arsenal will maintain their interest until the end of the season.
