Messi Representatives Brief Spanish Press
Reports yesterday from the Direct TV television programme Futbol Total claimed that Messi has begun to take English lessons ahead of a move away from Barcelona to Stamford Bridge. However, Messi’s representatives have briefed the Spanish media denying the reports saying the speculation “comes from a journalist that nobody in Leo’s environment has maintained a conversation with.”
Messi has been linked with an exit from the Nou Camp for some months and he did nothing to dispel those rumours by suggesting in an interview with an Argentine newspaper that he might not end his career at Barcelona as has previously suggested. Barca vice-president Josep-Maria Bartomeu countered that suggestion was stating that Messi is happy at the club.
But Futbol Total also suggested that Chelsea might bid for Messi. That sounds unlikely given that Messi’s release clause stands at over £200million.
The west London club are subject to the same Financial Fair Play restrictions as everyone else and have seen their net spending slashed over the past two summers.
However, Messi’s representatives have also ruled out the possibility of a Chelsea transfer and have stressed that he doesn’t feel ‘used’ by Barcelona. There were fears last season that he was being played while not fully fit.
Messi has been in rich form over the past two games. Last Saturday he broke the La Liga goalscoring record and he followed that up by becoming the leading goalscorer in the Champions League on Tuesday. He scored hat-tricks in both those games.
