Defender Out Of Contract Next Summer
The Switzerland international was linked with interest from the Gunners during the summer but he elected to remain with Swiss champions Basel for their Champions League campaign. But his contract expires at the end of the season and with no sign of him signing a new deal the Swiss side look set to sell him in January rather than let him go for nothing at the end of the season.
The 22-year-old has been tracked by a number of top clubs and was linked last week with interest from Serie A side Juventus. But he refused to rule out a move to the Italian club.
“To Italy in January? I do not exclude anything,” he told Calciomercato. “In football, as in life, everything is possible.”
Manchester United are also being linked with Schar as they seek to combat their own defensive problems, but Arsenal’s frailties at the back were cruelly exposed by Manchester United in their 2-1 victory over the Gunners at the Emirates on Saturday.
Arsenal haven’t replaced Thomas Vermaelen, who left for Barcelona in August. However, the Belgian has yet to play for the Catalan side due to injury.
Arsenal full-back Laurent Koscielny is still believed to be a few weeks away from making a return to the first team.
Even if Schar doesn’t make a move in January he can still speak to overseas clubs about a pre-contract deal.
