Injury Rules Out Arsenal Loan For Vermaelen

Defender Is Weeks Away From Return

Thomas Vermaelen Arsenal transfer newsAn Arsenal return for defender Thomas Vermaelen is being mooted, but the report appears to be just kite-flying by members of the press pack.

Vermaelen moved to Barcelona during the summer for an initial fee of £8million with a further £7million payable in various add-ons and bonuses. But the Belgium international has yet to play for Barca so far this season. He arrived at the Nou Camp already injured having been out of action since he played at the World Cup in the summer.

Reports have begun to circulate about a possible move back to England with either Arsenal or Manchester United. But while the story appeared in the Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo to give it some sort of credence, it was originally in yesterday’s Sunday Express, which takes away some of its believability.

However, all bets over a loan move are off as Vermaelen is injured again. Barcelona announced yesterday that the defender picked up a hamstring injury in training this week and won’t be available for the Champions League clash with Apoel Nicosia.

A return for Vermaelen is still some weeks away and with both Arsenal and Manchester United having injury problems of their own an additional crock is not what they need at the moment.
