Arsenal were linked last week with Real Mallorca midfielder Marco Asensio. But they can forget it. He’s heading for Real Madrid.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the European champions have agreed a deal with Mallorca which will see them pay the second division side €3.5million (£2.8million) for the 18-year-old. That’s despite Asensio having a release clause allowing him to leave on payment of €4.5million (£3.6million).
The difference is made up by Real allowing Asensio to remain at Mallorca until the end of the season. The island club currently lie in 11th place in the 22-team second tier, though they remain just two points off a play-off spot.
Real are also likely to do something about Asensio’s wages. He currently earns just €16,000 a year – the equivalent of little more than £250 a week.
Asensio made his first-team debut for Mallorca in September of last year and has now racked up 28 first-team appearances for the club.
