Injury Helped Ruin Real Switch
Gundogan, 24, missed practically the whole of last season after picking up a back injury during Germany’s friendly international with Paraguay in August 2013 and he only made his comeback for Dortmund in their 2-1 defeat at Cologne last month.
Speaking to Turkish television programme TRT1 Stadyum, Gundogan claimed that Real Madrid made a move for him in the summer of 2013.
“Real Madrid made an offer for me but my club rejected it,” he said.
“At that time I still had two more seasons left on my contract. But also, my injury wrecked it all. I wasn’t able to play for 14 months.
“Now I want to look towards the future and make up for lost time with sporting success. Playing abroad has always been one of my main objectives.
“If I do leave here one day, I’d like to play in Spain or England.”
We reported in June 2013 that Gundogan’s brother Ilhan, who is also his agent, flew to Madrid for talks with Real. However, Real had just signed Isco and had embarked on the protracted negotiations that led to the transfer of Gareth Bale in September of that year.
We wrote at the time that a 2014 exit was more likely for Gundogan when Real were planning their squad for this season. However, as he says, the injury scuppered any move. Plus Dortmund weren’t in the mood to sell. In the end, he signed a new contract with the German side earlier this year.
Manchester United have also been linked with Gundogan in the past but their interest has also been put on hold by his injury.
