Midfielder Is Seen As Arteta Replacement
Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho is an Arsenal transfer target as the Gunners eye up a replacement for Mikel Arteta. That’s the report doing the rounds this morning in both the Italian and the UK press.
Moutinho, 28, was linked with Manchester United during the summer. He is believed to be unhappy at Monaco following the departure of James Rodriguez, whom he also played with at Porto prior to their joint move to the Ligue 1 side in the summer of 2013.
The Portugal international has denied there was any chance of him moving to Old Trafford. His team-mate Radamel Falcao eventually moved on a season-long loan with the option of a permanent switch next summer.
But the calibre of high-profile exits from Monaco has led to speculation that the club’s billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev could be winding down his investment. The Ligue 1 side finished runners up last time out but currently lie in eighth place, 12 points behind PSG at the top of the table.
Arteta is out of contract this summer and while we reported at the start of the season that he was set to be offered a new deal the trail has since gone cold. The Spaniard is now 32 and can expect to earn only a one-year deal should the renewal go ahead.
But as ever with these stories the source is hard to pin down. The Daily Express claims the story originated in Italy, while the Italian press are claiming the story has its origins in Britain.
The Express claims Monaco will listen to bids in the region of £30million for Moutinho, who cost £36million when he was signed from Porto a season-and-a-half ago.
