Gunners Linked With Uruguayan Defender
Arsenal are being linked with a move for Benfica defender Maxi Pereira. Speculation has linked the Uruguay international with a move to Liverpool, who are looking for Pereira to replace Glen Johnson. But reports today claim that Arsene Wenger is aiming to hijack Liverpool’s move.
Pereira has been at Benfica since 2007. However, he turned 30 in the summer and Wenger rarely offers new contracts to players who have passed their 30th birthday.
The reports of a move by Wenger have come from Italy rather than Portugal. Reports from Portugal suggest Pereira is wanted by Uruguayan club Penarol.
But the defender is out of contract at the end of the season and is refusing to sign a new deal with Benfica. He knows he can leave for a nominal fee in January and he fancies a move to the Premier League.
Benfica appear resigned to Pereira’s departure and have even begun to look for a replacement. Even so, an Arsenal move looks unlikely for the Uruguayan.
Milan To Challenge For Cech
Arsenal will face competition from AC Milan for Chelsea keeper Petr Cech. The Czech Republic international was linked on Thursday with a £7million move to the Emirates, but that looks unlikely with the Gunners already having Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina in their squad.
Again, Milan signed a new keeper in the summer in the shape of Diego Lopez, whom they bought from Real Madrid. But the Serie A side are being linked with a move for the 32-year-old Cech who has lost his place to Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea side.
Cech is known to be unhappy at Chelsea after being dislodged in the first team. But a move to either Arsenal or Milan looks unlikely at present.
Arsenal Transfer Target Heading For Munich
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker wants his international team-mate Sami Khedira to move to the Emirates, but the latest reports suggest the Germany international is heading for Bayern Munich.
“Ozil and I spoke with Khedira a few times to join Arsenal. His contract is up next summer,” Mertesacker said at a Q and A session with fans on Wednesday.
But reports from Spain claimed on Thursday that Khedira will join Bayern when his contract expires next summer.
Arsenal were interested in Khedira last summer, but Arsene Wenger’s interest was ended when the midfielder demanded €9million a year in wages (£135,000 a week). Spanish radio station Cadena SER claims Khedira will move to Bayern on a free transfer at the end of the season but on wages of €4million. At £60,000 a week that’s less than half his summer demands.
Defender In Juve Link
Arsenal transfer target Fabian Schar has hinted at a possible move to Juventus. The Serie A champions are believed to be interested in snapping up the Switzerland international in January and when pressed by Italian website Calciomercato he refused to rule out such a move.
“To Italy in January? I do not exclude anything,” said Schar. “In football, as in life, everything is possible.”
Arsenal and Manchester United have both been linked with the 22-year-old.
