‘£35m Bid’ Expected For Everton Duo
Manchester United will return with a fresh bid for Everton duo Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines. The Daily Mirror claims the Red Devils will lodge a bid worth £35million for the Toffees pair after seeing a £28million bid rejected by Everton late last week.
Yesterday, Everton boss Roberto Martinez described the United bid as “a bit of a waste of time” and claimed it hadn’t detracted the pair from the side’s opening game of the season against Norwich last weekend. However, a number of outlets have speculated on a second bid, either a second joint bid or separate bids for each player.
The Mirror’s story appears to be guesswork based on the assumption that United aren’t going away after just one bid. However, the paper suggests that renewed bids are likely to come sooner rather than later with David Moyes aware that his old club has to sell before it can buy in the transfer market. An agreed bid for the duo would give Everton time to reinvest the money.
The Baines bid was the second Manchester United transfer bid for the England international. Earlier this summer, United offered Everton around £10million. This second bid was worth £12million. However, Martinez claimed the club had previously received what was regarded as a ‘final’ offer for one of their players – believed to be Baines – only to be followed by a further bid as part of the £28million joint effort last week.
Shaw Is Manchester United Transfer Target
Meanwhile, the Daily Express claims Manchester United could make a move for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw as an alternative to Baines. The paper claims United have enquired over the availability of Shaw after being rebuffed by Everton.
Shaw recently celebrated his 18th birthday by signing a new five-year deal with Southampton. The youngster made his Premier League debut in the early part of last season and soon became a regular in the Saints side.
Shaw was linked late last year with interest from Arsenal, while Chelsea were said earlier this year to be preparing a £16.5million bid. However, Shaw appears to be happy at Southampton where he knows a place in the first team is his. At United he may be expected to spend some time as an understudy to Patrice Evra.
Mourinho Hints At Fresh Rooney Bid
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admitted yesterday that he has three targets in mind for a new striker for the west London side. One of them is supposedly United’s Wayne Rooney. The Blues have had two bids for Rooney rejected by United but reports claim that a third bid is on its way. The Daily Express speculates any fresh bid could be in the region of £28million.
United and Chelsea clash at Old Trafford next Monday night and there have been reports for some weeks that a third bid would wait until after the two sides meet. Such a move would give Chelsea a week to wrap up a deal. However, United are insisting that Rooney is not for sale and that he will remain a United player beyond the transfer deadline of 11pm on 2 September.
