Valdes – ‘Nothing Has Changed’
Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes says he is happy to spend next season with the club but admits that nothing has changed since he announced in January that he would not be renewing his current deal.
Barca president Sandro Rosell confirmed yesterday that the 31-year-old Valdes has formally confirmed to the club his intention to continue and the keeper was asked about his decision at a press conference in Brazil today where he is preparing for Spain’s opening Confederations Cup clash with Uruguay on Sunday.
“Nothing is different it’s the same as I said in January,” said Valdes.
“Then I was not going to renew and am grateful to Barça for proposing a renewal”.
The Barca keeper added that he is “calm and confident” but he added that has “no news” about his future. “I have one year left on my contract with the club and I am very happy about this.”
Meanwhile, the agent of one of Valdes’s potential replacements, Inter Milan’s Samir Handanovic says he won’t be leaving the San Siro this summer.
“Unless there are surprises, Samir remains at Inter,” Claudia Pastorello said on her Twitter feed and she added: “He deserves a big club and we’re working on it.”
Barcelona were reported to have made an approach for the 28-year-old Handanovic with some claims that Inter have rejected a bid of 20million euro (£17million; $26million). Inter president Massimo Moratti said yesterday that Handanovic would not be leaving Inter. The Slovenia international is one of a number of candidates to replace Valdes. Others include Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid.
Elche Keen On Barca Defender
Barcelona B team defender Marc Muniesa is being linked with interest from newly-promoted Elche. The Spain Under-21 international is currently at the Uefa Under-21 championships in Israel, but Elche president Jose Sepulcre admits that any move before his contract at the Nou Camp expires on 30 June must go before the Barca hierarchy.
“Muniesa is free, but although we have good relations with Barcelona, we have to negotiate with this club.”
Left-sided defender Muniesa, 20, made just four first-team appearances for Barca the last of which came in 2011-12.
