Sheringham Warns Rooney Over Exit
Manchester United treble-winning hero Teddy Sheringham has warned Wayne Rooney against leaving Old Trafford. Rooney has been linked with a move away from United and was reported to asked for a transfer prior to Sir Alex Ferguson’s announcement that he was to step down as United boss. However, Sheringham saysthat there is only one direction he can head in if he leaves the club.
“When you finish playing for United it’s very hard to go anywhere better,” he told the Manchester Evening News.
“You’re playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and there aren’t many places you can go if you want your career to keep going up.”
Rooney has been linked with interest from clubs such as Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain although the first two mentioned have publicly distanced themselves from the England international. But Sheringham, who was part of the United side which won the treble in 1999, says Rooney should be thinking about more than just the size of his pay packet.
“I know he’s been linked to Paris Saint-Germain and I suppose he might get more money there, but how much money do you need?” said Sheringham.
“Football isn’t just about money.
“I think Rooney should work things out at Old Trafford and stay with the club – that’s what would be best for both him and for United.”
PSG striker Ezequiel Lavezzi claimed last week that Rooney would do “much good” for PSG and coach Carlo Ancelotti is believed to want to pair Rooney with Zlatan Ibrahimovic; however, Ancelotti’s own position is in doubt and he would be off to Real Madrid if he has his own way – only the PSG hierarchy are keeping him from leaving the Parc des Princes at present – and PSG’s recruitment is currently on hold.
Sources close to Rooney insist he hasn’t handed in a transfer request, which suggests it was made verbally, and talks are due to take place in the coming weeks between the player and new United boss David Moyes.
No Fabregas Move for United
Cesc Fabregas is not about to move to Manchester United. Speculation still links the Barcelona midfielder with a move back to England after reports earlier this week claimed United had made an enquiry over the 26-year-old.
Fabregas found playing time limited during his second season with Barcelona and the arrival of Neymar is likely to further limit his chances of first-team football at the Nou Camp, but reports from Spain claim that Barcelona don’t want to sell him and are looking for the full value of his 20million euro (£170million) release fee if he goes this season, while the player is said to be happy at Barca and doesn’t want to leave. However, Fabregas faces a critical season and the situation may chance next summer.
Uruguayan In United Trial
Manchester United have given a trial to Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela. The 20-year-old plays for Penarol in his homeland but recently spent some time at United’s Carrington complex and reports claim talks have already begun about a fee for the Under-20 international; however, he is due to fly to Italy for talks with Udinese and Fiorentina although the feeling is that his future lies in England.
