Santos Linked With Brazil Return
Arsenal full-back Andre Santos could be on his way out of the club. The Brazilian is being linked with a return to his homeland with Gremio ready to take him on loan.
Santos, 29, has been unimpressive since his £7million move to the Emirates from Turkish side Fenerbahce in August 2011 and was linked with a return to Turkey last month when Galatasaray were said to be interested. The negative reaction from Fenerbahce fans to the prospect of him moving to their bitter rivals was perhaps a reason the deal was scuppered although Galatasaray are keen on reviving their bid in the summer.
Arsenal moved quickly to find a replacement when Kieran Gibbs picked up a foot injury which has ruled him out for six weeks with the arrival from Malaga of Nacho Monreal and Santos may soon find himself back in his homeland after Gremio claimed they were in talks with Arsenal.
Gremio president Fabio Koff told Radio Gualbe in his club’s home city of Porto Alegre that talks have been going on for some time although he admitted: “The figures are very different,” suggesting the two sides have completely different valuations.
Santos himself was coy on the matter when he spoke to Brazilian newspaper Terra:
“It is too early to tell,” he said. “I know they [Gremio] are interested and are talking with my agent but I have not thought about it yet.”
Santos has played just 23 Premier League games for Arsenal since arriving at the club, 10 of which have come off the bench and he could move to Brazil in the coming weeks with the Brazilian transfer window still open.
Arsenal Linked With PSG Defender
Meanwhile, Arsenal are being linked with Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho. The 23-year-old centre-back was said to be a target for the Gunners as long ago as April of last year when he was said to be on his way out of the club after falling down the pecking order; however, he has won his place back in the first team and has 15 starts and two substitute appearances under his belt for PSG in Ligue 1 this season.
All of which makes a report by the Daily Express sound unlikely. The paper claims Arsenal and Liverpool could make bids this summer depending on how many games Sakho plays for PSG during the second half of the season.
